Austin Bergstrom International Airport - All Information on Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS)

Austin Bergstrom International Airport (IATA: AUS, ICAO: KAUS, FAA LID: AUS, formerly BSM) is eight kilometers southeast of Downtown Austin, Texas, United States.

Owned and operated by the City of Austin, it is the second-fastest growing, mid-sized airport in the United States. The airport is also an economic engine in Central Texas, supplying over 74,000 direct and indirect jobs in the Central Texas region.

It is located on the site of the former Bergstrom Air Force Base. The airport has two runways and three helipads with destinations in North America and Europe.

The Barbara Jordan Terminal is the main terminal with 34 gates, six of which are for international flights.

A secondary terminal (South Terminal) is for low-cost carriers Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines, which can be accessed from a separate entrance on the south side of the airport perimeter only. It cannot be accessed from either the main airport entrance. A shuttle runs between the two terminals.

There are several restaurants and food concessions inside the terminal, including inside the secured gate areas of the terminal.

Austin–Bergstrom International Airport covers an area of 4,242 acres and sits 165 meters above sea level at 30°11′40″N and 097°40′12″W.

History of Austin Bergstrom International Airport

On December 8, 1941, Capt. John August Earl Bergstrom, died while serving as an administrative officer with the 19th Bombardment Group, at Clark Field in the Philippines. He was the first soldier from Austin to be killed in action during World War II. The U.S. Army Air Force renamed the base to honor its fallen soldier.

In 1943, it was officially renamed the Bergstrom Army Airfield. In 1948, it was renamed Bergstrom Air Force base until military aviation ceased operation in 1995.

In 1999, it was reopened as Austin Bergstrom International Airport. The Austin City Council dedicated its two runways to its famous politicians. The West Runway (17R/35L) to the late President Lyndon Baines Johnson, and The East Runway (17L/35R) to former Congressman J.J. “Jake” Pickle.

Today, airlines such as Aeroméxico Connect, Air Canada Express, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, American Eagle, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, JSX, KLM, Lufthansa, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, Taos Air, United Airlines, United Express, VivaAerobús, and WestJet.

Its busiest domestic routes in 2021 include Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Colorado, Los Angeles, California, Atlanta, Georgia, Phoenix–Sky Harbor, Arizona, Las Vegas, Nevada, Charlotte, North Carolina, Orlando, Florida, Houston–Intercontinental, Texas, and Chicago–O'Hare, Illinois.
